Du Vernet, who visited the Rainy River Ojibwe in 1898. Students and faculty from the University of Toronto worked in consultation with staff, elders, and community members at the Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre of the Rainy River First Nations to develop a digitally annotated edition of diary in text and audio form. The website documents Ojibwe responses to Christianity during a particularly intense time of Canadian colonial expansion on Treaty 3 me that embracing the promise of the moment frees anyone from the burdens of the past—at least when looked at from the vantage point of the social scientist or humanist. However, sitting with these stories of chakras, power spots, and synchronicity should be enough to convince anyone that to ignore or deride their tellers is to close one’s ears to modalities of thought and experience that resonate across a wide range of “religious” and “secular” frames, including those that we are more accustomed to thinking with, whether Protestant, Catholic, or capitalist. Listening to the new metaphysicals, as Courtney Bender channels them, is an experience in retuning the scale of analysis, not in its scope but in its key.

“Fantasies of Sovereignty” for The Immanent Frame: Secularism, Religion, and the Public Sphere.

There is nothing natural about the sovereignty of US or Canadian law, which is not to say that these systems will disappear any time soon.
